Pipe Mechanic Level 1

The City of Valparaiso, located in the heart of Northwest Indiana, just 60 miles southeast of Chicago and 15 miles south of the beautiful Indiana Dunes National Park is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Pipe Mechanic Level 1.
The position reports to the Collections & Distribution Manager and is responsible for performing installation, maintenance, and repair activities on the distribution and collections infrastructure system.
To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function of the position satisfactorily.

Qualifications Include: * High school diploma or GED; experience in maintenance work involving utility maintenance and general repairs is a plus.
* Must be at least 18 years of age.
* Ability to meet all employer and department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test and essential function screening.
Position Expectations include: * Cleans debris off tops of intakes, removes piles of leaves and trash from curb lines, cleans brush from heavy storms, and pumps flooded areas into intakes.
* Installs, builds, and/or repairs manholes, intakes, sewer lines, storm lines, water lines, streets, sidewalks, and curbs, including locating areas needing repair and obtaining materials required.
* Operates equipment and machines to perform job functions including light equipment, mowers, pick-up trucks, one-ton trucks, hand and power tools, mechanic tools, concrete finishing tools, gas detection devices, and two-way radios.
* Performs preventive maintenance inspections and locates existing sewer collection and water distribution infrastructures for the “Call Before You Dig” service.
* Completes required daily work logs describing job assignment, hours and materials used.
* Must follow established safety procedures while completing work activities and operating assigned equipment.
* Serves on-call on a rotation basis after completion of one (1) year.
* Attends safety and training programs as scheduled.
* Performs related duties as assigned.

The salary for the Pipe Mechanic Level 1 is $54,174/year.
