Director of Special Education
Job Description
· Oversees Information from the IN Department of Special Education
o Monitor 18 Compliance Indicators and individual school corporation compliance
o Monitor changes in guidance from the IDOE-OSE and communicate changes
o Assist with local grants and required reports
o Monitors legislation affecting Special Education and makes local changes
o Serves on guidance committees as requested by the OSE
· Oversees the Local Policy and Procedures
o Maintains/updates local policy and procedures
o Acts as a liaison for service districts and nonpublic schools
o Keep abreast and communicate current enrollment trends for staffing needs
· Oversee Administrative and Office Duties
o Collaborate with Business Managers of budget development and Medicaid
o Directly supervise, assign and evaluate the following staff members (Assistant Director, Administrative Assistant/Data Reporter, OT, PT, and Contracted Consultants, DHH, BLV)
o Plan, prepare and facilitate professional development
o Assist schools with Manifestation Determinations
o Provide IEP & Service Plan reviews and teacher guidance
o Field phone calls, emails, and visits from schools, parents and others (i.
e.
DCS, CASA, etc.
)
o Recruit, hire and train special education staff
· Consultation with Administrators and School Staff
o Attend case conferences to assist schools (when requested)
o Assist with instruction, curriculum development and assessment for special education
o Monitor and visit special education classrooms and teachers
· Communicate Effectively
o Insure parents and schools are openly communicating
o Facilitate open communication between school corporations
o Represent corporations in I CHAMP complaints, mediations, and hearings
· Additional Duties
o Attend professional development workshops/conferences to share information
o Maintain an active membership in ICASE and INCEC
o Perform other duties as assigned by the Joint Superintendent Team
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
Must hold Indiana Educator License in Special Education
5+ years teaching experience in a public school special education setting
Previous experience in Special Education, Central Office, or Building Level Leadership
Preferred Requirements:
Special Education Director Certification and/or previous experience as a Special Education Director
Indiana Administrative License and/or previous experience as Building Principal
10+ years teaching experience
Experience in multiple grade levels
5+ years of leadership experience
Experience in multiple grade levels and/or departments
